THANKSGIVING and Feng Shui - Feng Shui Tips Blog

The last Fall “harvest” festival in America is THANKSGIVING.

Thanksgiving began in 1621 as a three-day feast to celebrate a bountiful harvest, and in 1863, President Lincoln declared a “day of Thanksgiving” in the midst of the Civil War.

However, it was Pilgrims who actually started the tradition of THANKSGIVING by giving thanks for surviving a brutal winter and a successful harvest, with the help of Native Americans in the area. In 1789 President George Washington proclaimed this harvest festival as the first national day of THANKSGIVING AND PRAYER.

This holiday has undergone only one major change. In 1939 President Franklin Roosevelt changed its date from the final Thursday in November to the next to last Thursday in November in hopes that a longer Christmas shopping period would boost retail sales!

Changing the date of a national holiday for a reason such as this – is hard to believe, isn’t it..?

However, knowing this – gives us the “opportunity” to re-examine who we are and what is truly meaningful and important in our lives.

This said, the Feng Shui principle that LESS IS MORE is also befitting during Thanksgiving. By putting “thanksgiving and gratitude” before MATERIALISM, we create “more” peace, harmony, balance, and sacred space not only in our homes, but in our hearts and minds as well.
